Channel Conflict

Channel conflict happens when a vendor's routes to market compete with each other: two partners chasing the same customer, or the vendor's own sales team competing with a partner. It damages partner trust and usually costs more in lost partner effort than it gains in individual deals.

The three common forms

Vertical conflict is vendor against partner, typically a direct rep pursuing an account a partner has been developing. Horizontal conflict is partner against partner, two resellers discounting against each other for the same customer. Multichannel conflict is structural: the same customer can buy self-serve online at one price and through a partner at another, and nobody has decided which is supposed to win.

Why it is so damaging

Partners invest ahead of revenue. They spend months developing an account with no guarantee of return, and that investment is only rational if the outcome is protected. One incident of a partner losing a developed deal to the vendor's own team can stop that partner investing entirely, and word travels through partner communities quickly.

The lost deal is visible on a dashboard. The partner effort that quietly stops afterwards is not, which is why this problem is chronically underestimated.

How to prevent it

The standard mechanisms are deal registration with rules the vendor actually enforces, clear rules of engagement stating which segments or territories are partner-led, and compensation neutrality so that a direct rep is paid the same whether a deal closes direct or through a partner. That last one removes the incentive to poach, and it is the one most companies skip.

Conflict in affiliate programs

Affiliate programs face a narrower version of the same problem, and it is mostly about attribution and paid search. If several affiliates touch a buyer, the attribution rule decides who is paid, so the rule needs publishing up front rather than settled case by case. Brand bidding is the other flashpoint: affiliates buying ads on the vendor's own brand terms compete with the vendor for traffic it would have won anyway, which is why most programs restrict or ban it explicitly.
